The Rev. Margi Colerick has been in ministry for over 45 years.
Margi's nativity collecting began because so many people gave her different nativities for Christmas. To her surprise, without any effort, she discovered that she had quite the beginning of an eclectic collection.
Margi's husband Bob is an avid "garage saler." Margi began seeing nativities at garage sales....some handmade and worn....others brand new....some broken and incomplete. It wasn't long before she found herself bargaining and dealing...and her collection began to grow. She discovered an opportunity to fix up these thrown away figures and re-claim the Gospel story.
Most special to Margi are the broken and incomplete nativities...the ones that are worn out, peeling, faded, torn, scraped, the figures with broken hands and missing characters. She treasures these in a special place of her heart. Carefully, she brings home the pieces and begins to "fix" them, giving them new life! Each nativity tells the story of Christ's birth in a special and unique way. She repaints them, polishes them, refines them, fixes them, creates new figures, completes them...whatever they need. She brings them back to life, so that they can proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ once again.
She finds great joy in helping restore these pieces. In her mind, she remembers that we are broken people. We are often worn out and faded, overwhelmed by life's stress...we, too, are incomplete and God picks us up, refines us, washes us, fills us and offers us new life. We are called to proclaim the Gospel story through our own lives.
She works on her nativities all year long. A few of her favorites stay out all year. But, at Christmas, they ALL come out on Display at different places across the country. She offers others an opportunity for an Advent Adventure: A Journey to Bethlehem. She invites us all to remember that the Christ Child offers us healing and life....that is the gift of Christmas.
Margi lives with her husband, the Rev. Bob Colerick in Kansas City, Missouri. They have three children, eight grandchildren and four great grand children. They currently have 4 small, yappy dogs: Sparky, Squirt, Sassy, and Twinky.
